Return to Gaming, Part II

So here's the next installment in my "Return to Gaming" series.  You can call it a series when there's two of something, right?  Anyways...

Yesterday was a good day.  Whilst taking mental breaks and logging into EQ2, I managed to level myself from 13.5-ish to dinging 17 by the time I logged out finally for the evening.  Not a bad deal.

I plowed through the blue quests I had in my log, which is how I prefer to level when I'm solo.  White con means it's equal level to me, blue is one level lower, green is two levels lower.  Yellow is one level higher than me, orange is two levels higher and red is instant death.  So I like working on the blue ones at once, white when I can handle the mobs (some are easier to kill than others) and I don't like letting quests go green on me.  Sometimes a quest line will be tagged yellow or orange though, but the initial requirements are white/blue to me.  That's because if it has multiple steps, later on the quest could lead me to a yellow/orange area.  Of course, by the time I reach that area, I should have theoretically leveled to the point where the previously too high bits are now just right!

So I ran around and completed some quests.  I figured out more about how the Shadowknight (SK) spells worked and just plain worked on my fighting techniques.  I have a few spells that will do damage to my target and heal me at the same time, but they aren't necessarily concentration based spells.  Most are timer based, meaning they'll only last for a certain amount of time.  I have one that is concentration based that lasts until I die or I turn the spell off.  It's a matter of timing to pull with my ranged damage spell, then get my dmg/heal spell up before the mob beats on me too hard, then start whacking back and dumping massive amounts of damage.

The massive amounts of damage part can be fun to see, to be honest.  Sometimes the mob resists my spells and it takes me forever to kill them, resulting in a race to see who dies first, me or the mob.  I've not always made it.  There is nothing more frustrating than having a mob down to a sliver of health, not being able to finish it off and instead, dying yourself.   The problem with having that happen though is I get mad and run back as quick as I can to try again and usually end up dying because I forgot to put my buffs back up or didn't take res sickness into account.  Then it's just a stupid death.

I had fun running around finishing a few of the quests I had in Darklight Woods (DW), then grabbed some inside Neriak itself.  A couple were grey to me, meaning the quest level was far too low, but I did them anyways.  These were quests I'd skipped getting in the city before because I like working on one zone at a time.  Still, a few were colored and I got started on them as well.  One quest (I forget where I picked it up at) finally sent me out into the Commonlands (CL) to hunt.  CL is to Freeport what DW is to Neriak.. kinda.  Freeport has a lot of little zones around it that newbies can hunt in off the island (or even without going to the island for that matter) and then they feed out into CL.  So the first few quests I found were green to me, which is fine I guess.  They still give XP and now I'll move into Wailing Caverns (WC) while out there.  WC has quests for a large range of levels, including mine and above.

I did find one quest that seems to be broken I think (Smuggler' Secrets) but I'm going to try deleting it and starting over now that I think I know what to do.  I couldn't get it to advance for me because I was almost more interested in opening the map and making discoveries than doing the quest.  Still, I'll see how that pans out later on.

I had fun running around opening up parts of the CL map once I got there.  Getting XP and achievement points (AA) for running around is nice.  It gets frustrating when you don't get either for something that you probably should (discovering a spot on the map) or when you just can't find the right trigger spot, but you know it's really close to where you are.  I eventually made my way into Freeport and then proceeded to occupy myself by trying to get the last 30% of my level (to get to 17) purely on map discoveries.  And except for turning in a grey quest and a collection quest, I did it too!  Not too shabby, which shows how nice the rewards for discovery can be.

I'm going to start on the CL series of quests next, since they involve Heritage Quests (HQ) which earn the guild experience as well.  Grimwell got me into a nice testing guild there, and they seem like nice sorts, so I'm going with it.  There is a strong presence at all hours of the day it seems, and according to Grim they are a good testing guild for this sort of thing.  Not bad and I needed a home since HoS isn't in EQ2.  I'm not PvPing though since any PvP without HoS isn't right in my mind.  That's why I'm carebearing it up!

I might hop into game tonight to finish opening what I can of the CL map before grabbing all the quests available that I can.  I can't play as late as I have the past few nights though because I have to haul my butt out of bed in the morning to head to downtown Chicago and a monthly visit to the client site.  Since I've not been going downtown more than once or twice a month, there's no need for me to maintain a desk setup anymore, so I'm bringing things home.  Have to remember to pack a bag to carry things in so I don't have to juggle stuff on the train.

Caio!
