Theme hell

Egads!

I've been somewhat bored with the theme on my journal here and finally decided to update/pick a new one.  And there are a ton of themes to choose from even for a freebie account.  But good gods, some of those layouts/colors/designs are so.... hideous.  I mean really, flat out, who the hell thought those colors looked okay together bad.  And the thing is, most of those are simply variations on a basic layout and someone (who thought they were a designer) simply came up with a ton of color variations and voila!  Instant theme!

I rather like the one I've switched to (Kite in the Clouds or something like that) even though I don't usually use art I haven't created myself.  The old theme (Randomness) was nice but I'm tired of grey and not having a date tag on the posts.

So I've not done much art recently, just not been in the mood nor have I had the time. I've been really limiting my time sitting at the computer in the evenings since I had surgery back in mid-October and that's one of the area's that had to give.

Only pieces I've done have been for contests over on the One Manga Forums, one for the manga coloring contest (theme = romance) and one for the WSAC #196 (theme = Touhou). So without further ado, here are my entries:

So, finally did a page for the manga page coloring contest over on One Manga. It's the cover page for chapter 120 of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle by Clamp, but as I don't read that series, I have no idea who the character is nor what her actual colors are.  I just went with what I liked.

I suck.

Okay, maybe that's a bit much, but some days I really do think I suck at drawing.  I simply don't practice often enough to get my skills up to where I can execute all the stuff in my head.  At least not my traditional drawing skills.

Anyways, I've decided that I'm going to start practicing drawing more and since my fat butt is usually sitting at a computer, I'll draw digitally.  And because I realize I have issues with my dark/light contrast values, I'm going to work in monochromes.  I'll pick a color for the background, a color to draw in, and that's it.  Those are the two colors I have to work with and no more.  I can play with flow and opacity, of course, but beyond that I'm not going to gt fancy.  I haven't completely decided about using brushes - should I limit myself to one brush size period, allow different brush sizes but it's all the same brush type, or change brush types as well.

For now, here's my first attempt at a person drawn using a size 13 hard brush, black and very pale grey as my colors, and both opacity/flow set to 50%.  I still haven't decided if I was going for a male or female yet, which just adds to my suckiness.

See the pic... )

Oh yeah, an update.  In under a year.

Hrm, forgot to mention, in addition to my issues with contrast, I can't draw noses but at least the hair isn't completely horrible.

It's only been just about 13 months, so let's call this an annual update, why don't we?

First up is a manga page coloring of Haine and Naoto from the manga Dogs: Bullets & Carnage.  It's from an earlier chapter but I'm not sure what page exactly.  This was originally done for the manga coloring contest over on the One Manga Forums.

Next up is a fanart piece for another contest on the One Manga Forums, this time for digital art.  I messed up though and missed the due date for entering, so instead I used the extra time to actually do a decent background for once.  Character is Ino Yamanaka from Naruto.

So we finally see Stark's release, and it's got to be one of the more unique one's out there (Why guns?  Why not!)  So I colored the excellent lines done by Hurqaline and it turned out pretty all right, if I do say so myself.

Teaser takes you to my deviantart page, because even my smaller versions are still pretty huge, and you can download the original (HUGE) size if you want over there.

So EQ2 has this pretty cool idea going on - Recruit a Friend program/promotion, which means that if you get a friend to sign up and subscribe (not just do the trial), both of you benefit. By linking your game accounts together (for this purpose only, I’m sure), anytime you and your friend(s) are grouped and you’ve mentored down, you both get an XP bonus. It’s designed to help get your friend up to speed fast, especially if you have a max level character and they are just starting out.

Well, it works. )

Wow, I was afraid it had been much longer than 2.5 months since I updated anything here.  Now I only feel marginally delinquent instead of horribly delinquent. *grin*

So anyways, got some fanarts, both finished this month.  Well, technically one is a fanart and one is a manga page coloring, but same thing, kind of.

Check them out! )
So enjoy the pics!

Your rainbow is strongly shaded indigo.

What is says about you: You are a proud person. You appreciate cities, technology, and other great things people have created. Friends count on you for being honest and insightful.

Find the colors of your rainbow at spacefem.com.

Huh, interesting.  Not that I dislike the shades, mind you, but odd nonetheless.

Found over on [livejournal.com profile] drelfina 's journal.

Oh yeah, guess this means I'm still alive.

So I did a straight out fanart piece recently - Sakura Haruno from Naruto.  I had an awesome reference photo that I worked from and did the entire piece in about 5-6 hours.  Not entirely happy with how the hair turned out, but I'll live.

So Codemasters is coming out with a new game, and this one on of the little meme-type things on their page. I only saw it because I was downloading the fansite kit for doing some Vault related work.
Hermes is the god of cunning and trickery, luck and commerce. The messenger of the gods, he rules the four winds and guides the spirits of the dead to the underworld. In addition to merchants and bards, he also counts the most daring of heroes among his patronage.
In battle, the followers of Hermes are a whirlwind of activity, nimbly dodging around their foes and unleashing a flurry of strikes. Their favored weapon is the SWORD, whose quick attacks allow them to interrupt their enemies, circle around their defenses, or stab them in the back.
Those who follow Hermes in word and deed receive his blessings, allowing them to run circles around their foes or interrupt them with ease. As a conduit to the gods, Hermes’ support also allows his followers to use God Powers more frequently.

I LIVE!!!

Just thought I'd toss that out there.  It's been over two months since my last post and I have no excuse.  Well, yeah, I do have an excuse, just not sure how many people will buy "But I was playing Age of Conan!" as a valid excuse and all.  Plus I've been (slowly, damn AoC) reworking my website.  New host, new gallery, new file organization.

Anyways, I come bringing fanart/manga page colorings for Bleach.  Chapter 298, pages 15-16, Captains Kurotsuchi, Unohana and Kuchiki arrive in Hueco Mundo.  I started this back in April and only now just finished it.  Yeah.  I'm still blaming AoC for this one.  Just as I'm blaming AoC for that half-written AoC review I need to finish.  For a game that I have so many complaints about, I sure do play it alot...

Anyways, teaser image here:

And I still miss my dad.  Not that my memories or grief can hold a candle to what I'm sure my mom's going through.  My youngest brother was over at Mom's last night with his family and I know she's going out to dinner tonight with at least one other (probably the middle one, but the older could be there as well) and his/their family.

I love you and miss you, Dad.

I've completely forgotten to post two panels that I've colored recently for Bleach.  The first one is Stark and Orihime from chapter 313, page 14, panel 1.

The second is Rukia and Gin from chapter 145, page 12, panel 1.

This one I did for a friend (Pansori) over on OneManga.com because she's such a huge Gin fan.  Based on some critique I got for this one, I'm thinking of redoing it slightly to change the highlights in Rukia's hair.  The lineart has that large area placed in it already, but it really doesn't work with how I did the hair, so what I'll probably do is just black that in and put my own version of the highlights in her hair.  That way it'll look more consistent with my style and won't bug me now that someone's pointed out how it looks.  Not that it's bad now, but I agreed that redoing that one spot made sense.

I've also started working coloring page 18 from chapter 213, Gin in his Espada outfit.  That will take a bit longer since I plan to do a full painting of it, meaning no lineart left.  I'm also about halfway done with a two-page spread of Mayuri, Unohana and Byakuya arriving in Hueco Mundo (chapter 298, pages 15-16).

And that's it for updates.

I've been ambitious the past few days and colored the cover of Chapter 82.  I've got two versions, one with text and one without (plus added clouds).

Scan is courtesy of Franky House, colors are by me, FMA (c) Hiromu Arakawa.  Half size versions, full size ones are viewable on my DeviantArt account.

The broker – an EQ2 player’s one-stop source for purchasing craftables, collectables and other fun items.  I’ve only been back playing EQ2 for about a month or so now (started up yet again about a week before the Rise of Kunark (RoK) expansion was released) but utilizing the broker was one of the first things I did.  When I played WoW, using the auction house was pretty integral to buying and selling items as well, so working the EQ2 broker was a natural step.  The broker saves time, can make you money and actually provides me lots of enjoyment.

I’ll be the first to admit that numbers aren’t my thing.  I used to screw my checkbook up using a calculator back when I was single.  However, playing the broker game can be a fun challenge; at least I find it so.  Some items are so common that they aren’t worth putting up for sale, harvestable items mostly.  I’d rather hold off on selling that stack of Antonican coffee beans until I eventually start crafting or just destroy them over letting it sit in the broker for days on end at 2c each.  The market is flooded for most harvestables, especially at the level I’m gathering at (TS right now, so tier 3?).  The rares are a different matter; they are saleable at any level.

My Library

I really need to get a photo of it, but in the meantime, you can see a (very) small selection of what books I own over here at LibraryThing.com.  It's free to join, but you can only list ~200 books in your library.  If you want to have more, you have to pay for a membership, but it's only $25 if I remember correctly.   I heard about it over on F13 a while back and started listing my books, but haven't had the time to continue.  I really should just sit down and start entering titles.  If nothing else, it might give me an idea of just how many books I actually own.

Only reason I started entering books again is because I finished reading Twilight Watch last night.  Last of a trilogy by Sergei Lukyanenko (or maybe not, a few reviews say it's a tetralogy now.. interesting!), along with Night Watch and Day Watch, all three books are really excellent and enjoyable.  I like how he carried the interlinked stories along and the translation (from Russian) was great.  As in, I didn't notice any problems or thought anything sounded weird when I read the book.

More fanart, this time with characters from Bleach, FMA and Naruto.  Here's a teaser to whet your appetites:
